Authors of Modern Ivory Netsuke:

Anthony Chan’s
majors in college were Computer Information Systems and Business, but it
wasn’t in school where he acquired his entrepreneurial spirit. He was
born with a gift for business, which he honed in real estate and even
auctions. Mr. Chan is not simply a man of business though; he is also a
man of artistic temperament, who balances his practical side with the love
of netsuke and other fine arts.
"I have tried to carve a few netsuke myself, and even though
I have all the right tools, all I got from my attempts was a greater
appreciation for the talent of the skilled artists I collect. Some of
these artists are already well known, some may achieve greatness in their
lifetimes, some may never get a chance to be known, and some only become
famous after their death. Like all artists, netsuke carvers take a great
personal risk to pursue their art, and we collectors are privileged to
appreciate the beauty of what they create."
Cynthia Lee Katona
has been a professor for over thirty years, changing
subjects as often as Mr. Chan has changed businesses. She has taught
English, journalism, photography, women studies, desktop publishing and
international education. When she is not teaching, writing or
traveling, she is learning as much as she can about modern mammoth ivory
netsuke.
